Unit of The Week: Hydro Hurricane Dragon

It begun with a howling wild storm.

[AUTO](VC/RC):When placed, COST [Counter Blast (1)], choose one of your opponent’s rear-guards, and retire it.
[AUTO](VC):When it attacks, if it is the first battle of the turn, this unit gets [Power]+10000 until end of that battle.

Many dragons live in the deep oceans in Aqua Force’s domain. One of those dragons is Hydro Hurricane Dragon! Bushiroad has remade the watery dragon for the standard format. It unleashes raw power to eliminate the enemy’s rear-guards. Hydro Hurricane Dragon is a grade three card with the Imaginary Gift: Accel!

Standard Format
First Effect

Hydro Hurricane Dragon retires one of your opponent’s rear-guards when it is placed on the field. This effect activates on rear-guard circle or vanguard circle. This is a good skill for retiring your opponent’s best rear-guards. I recommend retiring an opponent’s grade 2 rear-guard to remove an interceptor. Your opponent has a weaker defense, and you can add more pressure from your attacks.

Second Effect

Hydro Hurricane Dragon swings powerful attacks at your opponent when it is your vanguard. Hydro Hurricane Dragon’s second effect increases its power by 10,000 when it attacks during the first battle of the turn. Its total power rises to 22,000, and the power can become 30,000 with a boost. This skill adds early pressure on your opponent. That is the only advantage from the skill, and it has serious problems with the clan.

However, this is a horrible design for an Aqua Force unit. Aqua Force does not want its vanguard to have the first battle. This effect works against the clan’s strategy for multiple attacks from its rear-guards. Many rear-guards in Aqua Force are unable to properly function. You cannot properly play the clan under these conditions.

Furthermore, this effect has conflicts with Aqua Force’s best rear-guards and archetypes. For example, Blue Wings want the vanguard after them for they can use their ability to stand. Another conflict is with generic units from Aqua Force. They do not like being on the field with Hydro Hurricane Dragon. For example, Tidal Assault needs the first battle of the turn or he will lose 5,000 power.

Premium Format

Unfortunately, Hydro Hurricane Dragon is not a valuable card for Aqua Force in the premium format. Its skill do not create a major advantage in games. Aqua Force has better cards to retire opponents’ units. Also, its second effect does not have any value in the premium format. It conflicts with many powerful rear-guards in this format as well.

Card Rating

Overall, Hydro Hurricane Dragon is one of the worst cards from Cardfight!! Vanguard V. It does not function with any of Aqua Force’s cards. This card does not belong in any Aqua Force deck. The only positive note from Hydro Hurricane Dragon is its ability to retire an opponent’s rear-guards. That slight positive feature is not enough to justify playing it in a deck.
