Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Twilight

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing all LIGHT monsters or all DARK monsters from your Graveyard, while you have an equal number of each in your Graveyard, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. While face-up on the field, this card is also LIGHT-Attribute. When this card is Special Summoned: You can activate the appropriate effect, based on the Attribute of the monsters banished for the Special Summon. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect.
● LIGHT: Target 1 monster on the field; banish it.
● DARK: Banish 1 random card from your opponent’s hand face-down, until your opponent’s End Phase.

There’s a new Black Luster Soldier in town and he is Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Twilight!  This new card’s artwork is amazing. It looks like a true boss monster. Unfortunately, this card is very disappointing. Its skills are very useless. First, the summoning conditions are very difficult to meet. Secondly, the new Black Luster Soldier is unable to attack when he activates his skills.

Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Twilight is very difficult to summon. You must have the same number of Light and Dark monsters in the graveyard for the special summon. That is a very annoying condition to meet. On the other hand, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Beginning is much easier to summon because he only requires one Light and Dark monster regardless of how many Light and Dark monsters are in the graveyard.

The Light skill is the same as Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Beginning’s skill. You can banish an opponent’s monster, but neither Black Luster Soldier is unable to attack this turn. It’s a very balanced skill. I find it useful against monsters, who are protected from battle or effects that will destroy them.

Furthermore, the Dark effect is very bad. There is no logical reason to activate such a terrible ability. The opponent’s card will be banished until the end of his or her next end phase. However, you are unable to attack after using this skill. This effect does not give you an advantage. The opponent will get the card back, and you’re unable to attack.

Finally, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Beginning is able to attack twice per turn if his first attack is successful. Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Twilight lacks this ability or any powerful offensive skills. It cannot attack if you use one of its abilities. It’s only impressive offensive quality is its 3,000 attack points.

Overall, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Beginning is the far superior card. I do not expect many players to run Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Twilight in their decks. The summoning conditions are too difficult to meet. His Dark skill is a disgrace. Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Twilight is truly a lack luster card.
