Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Magician Navigation

[Trap Card]

Special Summon 1 “Dark Magician” from your hand, then Special Summon 1 Level 7 or lower DARK Spellcaster monster from your Deck. If you control “Dark Magician”, except the turn this card was sent to the GY: You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 face-up Spell/Trap your opponent controls; negate its effects until the end of this turn.

Magician Navigation is a normal trap for Dark Magician from Yu-Gi-Oh!. This trap assists strategies for decks with the Dark Magician. It complements the cards from the archetype of Dark Magician. Like its name, Magician Navigation navigates the special summon of the Dark Magician and a fellow spellcaster.

First Effect:

Magician Navigation is a trap for the special summon of the Dark Magician. Magician Navigation special summons Dark Magician from your hand and a level seven or lower spellcaster from the deck. This trap provides two monsters with the only requirement of Dark Magician in the hand. You have the monsters to create a strong field.

Therefore, Magician Navigation provides an effective option for the special summon of the Dark Magician. The Dark Magician is a normal monster and requires two tributes for his normal summon. This trap provides a more effective method to play this card from the hand. The only resource for this strategy is this trap.

In addition, the archetype of the Dark Magician has many spellcasters. You have many options for the second spellcaster from Magician Navigation. The archetype has monsters such as Apprentice Illusion Magician, Dark Magician Girl, and Palladium Oracle Mana.

For instance, Magician Navigation and Apprentice Illusion Magician have a strong synergy. You gather additional resources with this combination of cards. Magician Navigation may special summon Apprentice Illusion Magician from the deck. Then, this tactic triggers the effect of Apprentice Illusion Magician when you special summon her, and she adds Dark Magician from the deck to the hand.

Second Effect:

You may banish Magician Navigation from the graveyard, and negate the effects of an opponent’s spell or trap. This effect counters the opponent’s strategy. This trap does not destroy the card. It is an effective card against normal spells and normal traps because those cards leave the field after their activation.

Furthermore, the activation in the graveyard is an advantage. Some cards cannot negate the activation of effects from the graveyard like Magician Navigation. The card is in the graveyard instead of on the field. Some decks will not be able to stop this trap’s effect.

However, Magician Navigation only negates the opponent’s spells and traps. It does not negate the effects of monsters. An opponent can focus on his or her monster’s effects to avoid this trap’s activation from the graveyard.

Weakness:

However, Magician Navigation shares the same weakness with many traps. Traps are slow cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!. You need to set this card before you may activate it.

Furthermore, an opponent can destroy Magician Navigation on the same turn when you set it. Cards normally cannot be activated during the same turn when a player sets it. You will not get the benefits from this trap.

In addition, Magician Navigation requires Dark Magician in the hand for its first effect. It can become a dead card in the hand without this spellcaster. You only want this card when you have access to Dark Magician.

Support:

Magician Navigation has synergy with the archetype of the Dark Magician. This trap can special summon many spellcasters from the archetype. The deck searches the deck for this card.

Soul Servant has a unique synergy with Magician Navigation. This spell may place this trap from the graveyard to the top of the deck. You can draw this trap and set it on the field.

Furthermore, Magician Navigation sets up the special summon of Sorcerer of Dark Magic. Sorcerer of Dark Magic requires two level six or higher spellcasters for his special summon. This trap can provide those two monsters with its first effect. Then, you may special summon Sorcerer of Dark Magic from the hand with the two level six or greater spellcasters as tributes.

Support: Searchers

Many cards from the archetype of the Dark Magician can search the deck for Magician Navigation. You have consistent access to this trap. You may want to add this card to your hand when Dark Magician is also in your hand for its effect

For instance, Dark Magician the Magician of Black Magic, Dark Magic Inheritance, Dark Magical Circle and Dark Magician of Destruction may add Magician Navigation from the deck to the hand. Each of these cards have different requirements for their effects. Dark Magic Inheritance is a good option in the late game because it banishes two spells from the graveyard, and adds this trap from the deck to your hand.

Card Rating:

Overall, Magician Navigation is a good trap for Dark Magician. It special summons two monsters when you activate it. It is one of many options to play the Dark Magician from the hand. Decks may only play one copy of this card because its requirements require setup. Therefore, I recommend playing at least one copy of Magician Navigation in your deck.

Card Rating: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars
