Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Dark Burning Magic

[Spell Card]

If you control monsters whose original names are “Dark Magician” and “Dark Magician Girl”: Destroy all cards your opponent controls.

Dark Burning Magic is support for Dark Magician. It provides control of the filed for the Dark Magician. This quick-play spell has a single effect. It destroys all of the opponent’s cards on the field. Many cards in the archetype support this quick-play spell card.

In addition, Dark Burning Magic is a combination of Dark Magic Attack and Dark Burning Attack. Dark Magic Attack destroys all of the opponent’s spells and traps. Dark Burning Attack destroys all of the opponent’s face up monsters. Both effects provide a great advantage. Dark Burning Magic provides both effects in a single effect.

Effect:

Dark Burning Magic destroys all of the opponent’s monsters if you have monsters with the original names of Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl. This spell card helps the Dark Magician to clear the opponent’s board. You have the opportunity of direct attacks at the opponent.

Furthermore, Dark Burning Magic does not target cards. It is able to bypass some monsters with protections. This quick-play spell card can destroy powerful monsters such as Darklord Morningstar.

In addition, Dark Burning Magic may only activate its effect when you control the original cards of the Dark Magician and Dark Magician. Other cards do not meet this requirement. You must use effective methods to play both spellcasters on the field.

For example Magician Navigation is the best trap card to set up the conditions for Dark Burning Magic. This trap card special summons Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl from the deck. You have both spellcasters on the field for this quick-play spell card.

Flaw in Design:

However, Dark Burning Magic has major flaws. The archetype of Dark Magician does not have any great options to easily place Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl on the field at the same time. The support with this ability requires set up and time.

In addition, this effect requires the original cards of the Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl. The many monsters with the change in their names to Dark Magician do not meet the requirements. Their requirement names do not meet the conditions for the effect.

For example, Dark Magician the Dragon Knight and Magician of Dark Illusion become Dark Magician in particular areas of the board such as the field or graveyard. They gain the benefits of most cards in the archetype. They do not have the original name of Dark Magician Magician. Therefore, you cannot make a combo of Dark Burning Magic with those monsters.

Support:

Dark Burning Magic has synergy with cards in the archetype of the Dark Magician. This quick-play spell card requires Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl. Many cards in the archetype may add this quick-play spell card to your hand. Other cards may special summon the spellcasters for this spell’s effect.

Many cards can search the deck and add Dark Burning Magic to the hand. Dark Magic Inheritance and Magician’s Rod may add this quick-play spell card from the deck to the hand. You have consistent access to this card. These cards are great searchers when you meet the conditions for this quick-play spell card’s effect.

Play these cards with Dark Burning Magic!

Card Rating:

Overall, the concept of Dark Burning Magic is a good idea on paper, but the quick-play spell falls short due to inconsistency. Its effect provides a great advantage when it destroys all of the opponent’s cards on the field. However, it is an inconsistent card in practice. This quick-play spell card requires a lot of set up because the card requires the original Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl. You need time to play both cards. Therefore, I recommend playing only one copy of Dark Burning Magic in your deck.
