Call of the Haunted

Trap Card

Activate this card by targeting 1 monster in your GY; Special Summon that target in Attack Position. When this card leaves the field, destroy that monster. When that monster is destroyed, destroy this card.

Call of The Haunted was one of the most commonly played Trap Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! It is an alternative option for playing Monster Reborn. Its name says what the card’s effect does on the field. Call of The Haunted was first printed in 2004 in Dark Beginnings. It has been reprinted many times throughout the game’s history.

History in Anime

Call of The Haunted first appears in episode 17 in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Bonz uses this card during his duel against Joey Wheeler, and it has a strong effect than the real card. He uses this card to special summon Zanki, Crawling Dragon, and Crass Clown as “Armored Zombie”, Dragon Zombie”, and Clown Zombie”from his graveyard. This trap card also appears in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, and Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL. The card’s correct effect is correctly used in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s.

Revive Your Monsters!

Call of The Haunted special summons a monster from your graveyard, and you play it in Attack Position. This effect helps you regain a monster. You can play it directly after your opponent destroys your monster. You can also play activate the card after using the monster as a tribute. There are a lot of strategies for playing Call of The Haunted.

Furthermore, Call of The Haunted became a very common card in decks when Monster Reborn was ban. Players sought a new option for special summoning monsters from their graveyards. This was a quick and affordable replacement for Monster Reborn. It is an accessible card in many starter decks and structure decks. Call of The Haunted was played in the 2015 world championship deck.

Weakness

However, Call of The Haunted has a major weakness. It is a trap card and it is vulnerable to being destroyed by your opponent. If it is destroyed, then your monster returns to the graveyard. You opponent does not need to battle your monster to defeat it. He or she can simply remove Call of The Haunted from the field.

Furthermore, archetype have access to better cards than Call of The Haunted. They can special summon monsters from their graveyards without the same weakness. Return of The Dragon Lords for dragons and Spellbook of Life for spellcasters are far superior cards to play in decks. Monster Reborn is also a legal card now in the TCG. Players are playing these cards over Call of The Haunted.

Overall, Call of The Haunted has passed its prime. Most decks have better options for special summoning monsters from their graveyards. I recommend playing Monster Reborn instead of  Call of The Haunted. Monster Reborn is a more efficient card for all decks. The moments with Call of The Haunted were great, and it is now time to finally place it in my collection binder.

  1. New cards now can simply access monster revive from the graveyard but sometimes they were archetype exclusive effects. This card is useful for a deck with a mix of random cards. Like my King Goblin deck with a mix of non-archetype fiend monsters, I always back up my King Goblin. “CotH” is a flexible trap card, fits on any deck but not on archetype specialize decks.
