Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Toon Cannon Soldier

[Machine/Toon/Effect]

ATK/14,00 DEF/1,300

Cannot attack the turn it is Summoned. If “Toon World” on the field is destroyed, destroy this card. While you control “Toon World” and your opponent controls no Toon monsters, this card can attack your opponent directly. You can Tribute 1 monster; inflict 500 damage to your opponent.

Toon Cannon Soldier is an alternate version of Cannon Soldier. This card is a level four monster and a machine with four effects. Toon Cannon Soldier includes the same effect as the original card.

First Effect:

Konami balances this card with his first effect. Toon Cannon Solider cannot attack an opponent during the turn when you summon it. This limitation prevents the use of the second ability to directly attack an opponent without a Toon monster on the first turn with this card.

Second Effect:

Toon Cannon soldier requires Toon World on the field or you must destroy this monster. This condition limits the ability to summon this monster. This card is unplayable without this field spell.

Furthermore, Toon Cannon Soldier has the common weakness of most Toon Monsters. This card is instantly destroyed without Toon World on the field. This weakness makes it difficult to play this card against many decks.

An opponent does not need to target Toon Cannon Solider. The opponent only needs to destroy Toon World, and you lose Toon Cannon Soldier. Many cards have the effect to destroy other cards. An opponent play easily destroy Toon World with Mystical Space Typhoon.

Third Effect:

Like all Toon monsters, Toon Cannon Soldier may attack the opponent directly when you have Toon World on the field. This machine delivers a chunk of damage. A direct attack from Toon Cannon Soldier inflicts 1,400 points of damage.

However, this effect requires your opponent not to have any Toon monsters. An opponent with this type of monster avoids this effect. You must battle your opponent’s Toon monsters in battle.

Fourth Effect:

Toon Cannon Soldier shares the same effect with the original Cannon Soldier. This monster may tribute one of your monsters to inflict 500 points of damage to the opponent. You may activate this ability more than once per turn.

Scapegoat is a good spell card for Toon Cannon Soldier. This spell card provides the fuel for the third effect. Scapegoat creates four tokens, and Toon Cannon Soldier may tribute all four tokens to inflict 2,000 points of damage.

However, this effect is not an ideal ability for Toons. Toons want to attack your opponent directly and you want them on the field. A Toon can deal more damage than a tribute for this effect.

Support:

Toon Cannon Soldier has solid support from Toons. The archetype has field spells to enable you to play this card. The archetype also has many searchers for this card.

Toon Kingdom is the best field spell for Toon Cannon Soldier. This card also becomes Toon World. In addition, this field spell also provides protection. Toon Kingdom protects Toon Cannon Soldier from your opponent’s card effects that target your Toon monsters.

Furthermore, many cards have the effect to add Toon Cannon Soldier to your hand. Two of these cards are Toon Table of Contents and Toon Mask. They provide instant access to this monster from your deck.

Play these cards with Toon Cannon Soldier!
  • Comic Hand
  • Scapegoat
  • Toon Kingdom
  • Toon Table of Contents

Card Rating:

All in all, Toon Cannon Soldier is a mediocre card for Toons. The monster’s signature ability is tributing monsters to inflict damage to the opponent. The effect is not an ideal strategy for Toons because Toons like to directly attack an opponent. Therefore, I only recommend playing Toon Cannon Solider in a casual deck.

Card Rating: [usr 2.5]
