Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Power Vice Dragon

[Dragon/Effect]

ATK/2,000 DEF/2,400

A “Red Dragon Archfiend” that was Synchro Summoned using this card as material cannot be destroyed by battle. You can only use each of the following effects of “Power Vice Dragon” once per turn. If you control no monsters, or all monsters you control are DARK Synchro Monsters: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is Special Summoned: You can add 1 “Resonator” monster from your Deck to your hand, also you cannot Special Summon from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except DARK Synchro Monsters.

Power Vice Dragon is an effect monster from Yu-Gi-Oh!. This card supports Red Dragon Archfiend. It enables the synchro summons for the archetype. This effect monster is designed to be synchro material for synchro summons. The deck has another method to synchro summon Red Dragon Archfiend from the extra deck.

First Effect:

Power Vice Dragon adds an effect to Red Dragon Archfiend when Power Vice Dragon is synchro material for its synchro summon. The effect prevents Red Dragon Archfiend from being destroyed by battle. This effect provides protection to this synchro monster.

Therefore, Power Vice Dragon is an ideal option as material for Red Dragon Archfiend. An opponent may have a monster with more attack points, but Red Dragon Archfiend remains on the field after battle. Your field will have a monster to prevent a direct attack at your life points.

However, this effect has two flaws. First, this effect does not prevent damage to your life points. An opponent’s monster can still inflict damage from the difference of its attack points and Red Dragon Archfiend’s attack points. You can potentially lose a game due to damage from a battle.

Second, this effect does not provide absolute protection. An opponent can still destroy Red Dragon Archfiend with effects from monsters, spells, and traps. An opponent can play a card to banish Red Dragon Archfiend. For instance, cards such as Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of The Beginning can banish this synchro monster.

Second Effect:

Power Vice Dragon special summons itself from the hand when you do not control any monsters or only control dark synchro monsters. This effect is setting up your synchro summon with this effect monster as material. It is now on the field for a variety of options. You can use it as synchro material or use it for offense with its 2,000 attack points.

Furthermore, Power Vice Dragon is an effective card at the beginning of a duel. You can special summon this card on your first turn. Your field will not have any monsters at the start of your first turn. In addition, you may still normal summon a monster after you special summon Power Vice Dragon.

For instance, you may synchro summon Scarred Dragon Archfiend during your first turn. This strategy requires you to special summon Power Vice Dragon and normal summon Soul Resonator. They have a total of eight levels. Therefore, you may use Power Vice Dragon and Soul Resonator as synchro material for Scarred Dragon Archfiend.

Third Effect:

Power Vice Dragon adds one Resonator from the deck to the hand when you special summon this effect monster. This effect is setting up your synchro summon. Resonators are tuner monsters, and they support Red Dragon Archfiend. The deck wants one of these tuners in your hand because it enables your synchro summons.

Darkness Resonator is a great option for this effect, and it is an extender with Power Vice Dragon. Darkness Resonator is a level three tuner monster. This tuner monster can special summon itself from the hand by revealing a “Red Dragon Archfiend” in your Extra Deck. Its level combines perfectly with Power Vice Dragon. They have a combined eight levels. You may use Power Vice Dragon and Darkness Resonator as materials for the synchro summon of Red Dragon Archfiend.

Add these Resonators from the deck to your hand!
  • Darkness Resonator
  • Vision Resonator

Synchro Material

Konami designed Power Vice Dragon to be synchro material for monsters from the archetype of Red Dragon Archfiend. Power Vice Dragon is ideal Synchro Material because it is a level five monster and it works well with Resonators at level three. You can pair this effect monster with one or more tuners for a synchro summon.

You can use Power Vice Dragon to synchro summon Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend. Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend is a level ten synchro monster, and it requires two tuner monsters and one non-tuner monster. The effect of Power Vice Dragon increases the consistency for Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend because it can search the deck for one of the tuner monsters. You may use Power Vice Dragon, Darkness Resonator, and Vision Resonator for the synchro materials because their combined levels equal ten. All three of these monsters special summon themselves from the hand. Furthermore, Darkness Resonator and Vision Resonator are tuner monsters. Therefore, you may use Power Vice Dragon, Darkness Resonator, and Vision Resonator for the synchro summon of Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend.

Use Power Vice Dragon as synchro material for these synchro monsters.
  • Red Dragon Archfiend
  • Scarred Dragon Archfiend
  • Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend

Support:

Power Vice Dragon has synergy with many cards in the archetype of Red Dragon Archfiend. The deck’s primary strategy is synchro summoning synchro monsters from the archetype. You can pair this effect monster with the various tuners that support Red Dragon Archfiend.

Support: Searchers

The archetype of Red Dragon Archfiend has several cards with effects to add Power Vice Dragon to your hand. These cards add consistency to this effect monster. You can search for it when you need it during the duel. The deck extends plays with this strategy.

For instance, Crimson Gaia and The Crimson King may add Power Vice Dragon from the deck to the hand. This card has value in the hand because it can special summon itself to the field. It is an extender with its second effect to add one monster with Resonator in its name from the deck to the hand.

Play these cards with Power Vice Dragon!
  • Crimson Gaia
  • The Crimson King

Matchups: Weaknesses.

Opponents have options to counter Power Vice Dragon. Some cards can interrupt combos with extenders like Darkness Resonator alongside Power Vice Dragon. Some cards may force you to discard a card from the hand. Other counters may negate the effects of Power Vice Dragon.

Masked HERO Dark Law presents a major disadvantage for Power Vice Dragon. Masked HERO Dark Law forces an opponent to discard a card when he or she adds a card from the deck to the hand outside of the draw phase. This fusion monster allows its player to randomly pick a card from your hand and discard it. Power Vice Dragon adds a Resonator from the deck to your hand. However, Masked HERO Dark Law will force you to discard a card and it could be the Resonator.

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is a staple in many decks. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring negates the third effect of Power Vice Dragon. You lose the opportunity to add a Resonator to your hand. This strategy from Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring prevents you from extending the play for a synchro summon with the Resonator.

Card Rating

Overall, Power Vice Dragon is an efficient card for Red Dragon Archfiend. It is a staple in the deck. All three of its effects complement the archetype. This card consistently enables synchro summons for Red Dragon Archfiend. It can make a quick impact on your first turn when it special summons itself and adds a Resonator to your hand. Therefore, I recommend playing Power Vice Dragon in your deck!
