Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Pot of Dichotomy

[Spell]

At the start of your Main Phase 1: Target 3 monsters with different Types in your GY; Shuffle all 3 into the Deck, then draw 2 cards. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this card.

Konami has created many clones of Pot Greed after they they banned the powerful spell card with the free effect to draw two cards. One of these clones is Pot of Dichotomy. This spell card also allows the player to draw two cards. However, the spell card requires set up for its effect. Only certain decks can consistently fulfill the condition.

Effect:

Pot of Dichotomy returns three monsters of different types from the graveyard to the deck and you may draw two cards. You may only activate this card at the start of your Main Phase 1. This spell card provides two additional draws and returns important monsters to the deck. You may draw important cards for your strategy.

Furthermore, Pot of Dichotomy provides consistency to decks, and the spell card potentially helps set up your field. You are drawing additional cards for the turn. You have more cards in your arsenal for a field spell, special summons of key monsters, and traps.

In addition, Pot of Dichotomy requires some set up. You need three monsters of different types in the graveyard. This can be done quickly with multiple special summons, tributes, and effects. The speed of the set up depends on the set up. Yu-Gi-Oh! has many strategies to send multiple monsters to the graveyard.

Drawbacks:

However, Pot of Dichotomy is an imperfect clone of Pot of Greed. This spell card has some drawbacks due to its cost and restriction after its activation. These drawbacks lower the card’s efficiency in games.

First, Pot of Dichotomy does not fit in every deck. This spell card needs a deck with a variety of types of monsters. It is not an ideal card in decks such as Prophecy and Elemental Heroes. Those archetypes mostly have one type of monster. You cannot consistently activate this spell’s effect in those decks.

Furthermore, this spell card may become a brick in your opening hand. You may only activate Pot of Dichotomy at the start of your Main Phase 1. You may be in a bad position to not play any cards and wait for additional resources.

Second, Pot of Dichotomy does not allow the player to conduct the battle phase during the same turn of its activation. This spell has the potential to provide key pieces when you draw two cards. You cannot fully utilize your new resources. None of your monsters are able to battle the opponent and deal damage by battle.

Support:

Pot of Dichotomy best fits in decks with a variety of monster types. These decks can consistently meet the cost for the effect. They can use this spell when their graveyards meet the conditions for the effect.

Therefore, Pot of Dichotomy is a useful card in decks with Ligthsworn, Mermail, Toon, and X-Saber. These archetypes have a variety of types of monsters. Their graveyards can consistently enable the conditions for this spell card.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has cards with the ability to search this spell. Left Arm Offering and Triple Tactics Thrust may search for Pot of Dichotomy. Triple Tactics Thrust may set this card on the field, and Left Arm Offering adds this spell from the deck to your hand.

Play these cards with Pot of Dichotomy!
  • Left Arm Offering
  • Triple Tactics Thrust

Card Rating:

Overall, Pot of Dichotomy is one of the worst clones of Pot of Greed. The spell card falls short due to its two problems. The spell card requires a good amount of set up and it has a horrible drawback. The removal of the battle phase for a turn is a disadvantage. You draw two cards but you cannot take fully advantage of those cards in battle. Your new set up is waiting for a second turn. Therefore, I caution the addition of Pot of Dichotomy in your deck, and recommend reviewing other options such as Pot of Pot of Avarice.
