Furthermore, Army of the Haunted is inspired by the duel between Bonz and Joey. Bonz activates Call of the Haunted to revive Zanki, Crawling Dragon, and Crass Clown from his graveyard, and all of these monsters become zombies. The artwork of Army of the Haunted depicts these monsters in their forms as zombies.

First Effect:

Army of the Haunted special summons itself when you control Call of the Haunted. This effect provides a free special summon. You have a monster with 2,400 ATK on the field for offense or you may use it as material for a special summon from the extra deck. 2,400 ATK from this effect monster can inflict a respectable amount of damage from a direct attack.

Therefore, this effect fits the modern game of Yu-Gi-Oh!. You do not need to pay two tributes, and you save your resources. You can quickly activate this effect when you meet the requirement.

However, Army of the Haunted requires Call of the Haunted on the field without any interruption from the opponent. Traps are vulnerable cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!. Decks have a variety of options for removal. An opponent can easily play Mystical Space Typhoon and destroy Call of the Haunted. Then, Army of the Haunted loses its requirement for its special summon.

Second Effect:

Army of the Haunted may set Call of the Haunted from the graveyard to the field when this monster is sent to the graveyard. Your field now has a new copy of Call of the Haunted. You may activate it after this turn.

Therefore, Army of the Haunted provides a method to regain Call of the Haunted. An opponent may destroy the trap at any time during the duel. You need this trap for the deck’s strategy.

Furthermore, different methods may send Army of the Haunted to the graveyard. For example, you may detach this card as XYZ material for the cost of an XYZ monster’s effect. This method triggers this effect and you may set Call of the Haunted from the graveyard to the field.

Army of the Haunted is a good option for rank six XYZ monsters. Zombies have many rank six monsters. Many rank six zombies complement the unique strategy of decks with Call of the Haunted.

Matchup: Weakness

Army of the Haunted has disadvantages against a variety of cards and decks with strategies to affect the graveyard. First, decks with the ability to restrict access to the graveyard disrupt this effect monster’s effects. Second, cards with the ability to banish cards counter this effect monster’s dependence on the graveyard.

Gravekeeper’s has a major advantage against Army of the Haunted. This archetype locks the opponent’s graveyard with Necrovalley. Necrovalley negates effects with the ability to move cards from the graveyard. This restriction negates the effect of Army of the Haunted to special summon itself from the graveyard and the effect to set Call of the Haunted from the graveyard.

Furthermore, cards with the ability to banish cards shut down Army of the Haunted. Called by the Grave, Masked HERO Dark Law, and Black Luster Soldier Envoy of the Beginning can banish this effect monster. Army of the Haunted cannot activate its effect in banishment.

Card Rating:

Overall, Army of the Haunted is a staple for decks with Call of the Haunted. This effect monster sets up the deck for success. It enables the XYZ summons for zombies. It can special summon itself to the field without a cost. This card sets Call of the Haunted to the field. Therefore, I recommend playing Army of the Haunted in your deck.
