Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Aegaion the Sea Castrum

[Machine/XYZ/Effect]

ATK/? DEF/3,000

2 Level 8 monsters
During either player’s turn: You can banish 1 random face-down monster from your opponent’s Extra Deck, face-up, and if you do, this card’s ATK becomes equal to the banished monster’s. During either player’s turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 of your opponent’s banished Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Monsters; return it to the Extra Deck, and if you do, destroy 1 monster your opponent controls with the same monster card type (Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz). You can only use each effect of “Aegaion the Sea Castrum” once per turn.

Aegaion the Sea Castrum is a machine and a rank eight XYZ monster. You may play this card in any deck with level 8 monsters for a rank eight XYZ monster. This generic machine has two effects. It has a unique strategy. This machine relies on luck with one of its effects randomness.

First Effect:

Aegaion the Sea Castrum banishes a random card from the opponent’s extra deck and gains the ATK from the opponent’s banished monster. This effect disrupts the opponent’s strategy. He or she loses a powerful card from the extra deck.

This effect provides a major advantage against decks with a strong dependence for their Extra Deck. Aegaion the Sea Castrum counters archetypes such as HERO and Utopia. Aegaion the Sea Castrum is removing the best cards for these archetypes from the game.

However, the random selection of the monster from the opponent’s extra deck is a setback. You are gambling the ability with a chance of banishing a monster with a high ATK or monster with a low ATK. You may banish a weak monster and Aegaion the Sea Castrum only gains a small amount of ATK.

Second Effect:

Aegaion the Sea Castrum has a destructive effect. Aegaion the Sea Castrum returns an opponent’s banished monster and destroys an opponent’s monster of the same type of card. For instance, you may return a banished Fusion monster and destroy an opponent’s Fusion monster on the field the field. It is a unique strategy for card destroying monsters.

However, this effect is very inconsistent. You may banish a XYZ monster but the opponent only plays Fusion monsters to avoid this effect. Many archetypes have a variety of monsters with different types. Aegaion the Sea Castrum is unable to activate the second ability if the banished monster is a different type of card than the opponent’s monster on the field.

XYZ Summon:

Aegaion the Sea Castrum requires two level eight monsters. It has a generic requirement and you may use any type of monster for the XYZ Summon. Decks with level eight monsters can consistently summon this monster.

Machina is a good fit for Aegaion the Sea Castrum. Machina has many level 8 monsters for Rank 8 XYZ monsters. This archetype is able to special summon these monsters very easily. For instance, Machina Megaform and Machina Air Raider are level 8 monsters for XYZ summons and they special summon themselves. You may use these cards to XYZ summon Aegaion the Sea Castrum.

Support:

Aegaion the Sea Castrum has a lot of good support from machine monsters and generic support for machines. You may play this card with Cyber Dragon, Machina, and Ancient Gear. It is also a generic card and you may play it other decks outside of machines.

Limiter Removal is a powerful card for machines and this spell card doubles the ATK of Aegaion the Sea Castrum. This monster may reach a high amount of ATK under the right circumstances. You only need the first effect to randomly banish a monster with a high ATK from the opponent’s extra deck.

For instance, Aegaion the Sea Castrum may banish Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon with its first effect and it gains 4,500 ATK. Limit Removal doubles the ATK of this machine. Therefore, Aegaion the Sea Castrum would have a total of 9,000 ATK with this combo.

Card Rating:

Overall, Aegaion the Sea Castrum is an inconsistent card and I doubt it will ever be a competitive card. The randomness of the first effect hinders the second effect. Opponents with a variety of monsters in their extra decks may avoid the second effect. I only recommend playing  Aegaion the Sea Castrum in a casual deck.
