Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Infinite Impermanence

[Trap Card]

Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; negate its effects (until the end of this turn), then, if this card was Set before activation and is on the field at resolution, for the rest of this turn all other Spell/Trap effects in this column are negated. If you control no cards, you can activate this card from your hand.

Infinite Impermanence is one of the best Trap Cards from the modern era of Yu-Gi-Oh! The card has fantastic artwork and two amazing effects. Infinite Impermanence has all of the qualities of a hand trap in a Trap Card. It is one of the few traps with the ability to activate itself from your hand. In addition, Infinite Impermanence is a generic card, and you may play it in any deck.

Anime:

Infinite Impermanence appears in episode 77 of Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. Ghost Gal (Emma Bessho) plays this Trap Card in a speed duel against The Shepherd (Kenneth Drayden). Ghost Gal attempts to play Impermanence from her hand. However, The Shepherd chains Drone Corporal’s effect to negate Infinite Impermanence.

First Effect: Part 1

Infinite Impermanence negates the effects of one your opponent’s monsters for a single turn. This effect stops the opponent from gaining any advantage for his or her monster’s effects. He or she loses any momentum for the moment.

For example, you may activate Infinite Impermanence to negate the effects of Elemental HERO Stratos. The opponent cannot use Elemental HERO Stratos’s effects to add a card to the hand or destroy your spells and traps. This example demonstrates the effectiveness of  Infinite Impermanence.

First Effect: Part 2

Infinite Impermanence also negates the effects of any Spell or Trap in the same column if this card was set when you activated it. Therefore, you can counter two of the opponent’s cards to remove his or her advantages. The opponent is unable to continue his or her strategy for the turn.

Furthermore, the placement of Infinite Impermanence is a very important strategy. You should place the card in the same column of an opponent’s card. You will maximize the card’s full potential.

Second Effect: Hand Trap

You may activate Infinite Impermanence from your hand if you do not have any cards on the field. This effect opens the door to good strategies. You do not need to set the card to play it. In addition, the activation from your hand will surprise the opponent.

Furthermore, you can avoid the risk of Infinite Impermanence set on the field. An opponent could play a card such as Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy this card before he or she summons a monster an with effect. You may hold Infinite Impermanence in your hand to avoid an early destruction before you have an opportunity to use its effect.

However, you will not gain the full benefits from the first effect. Infinite Impermanence will only negate the effects of an opponent’s monster when you activate the Trap Card from your hand. Therefore, the trap’s placement does not matter in this situation.

Generic Trap:

You may play Infinite Impermanence in any deck. It only has generic effects without any requirements of a particular archetype. The generic abilities add a lot of value to this Trap Card. Every deck benefits from the ability to negate a card’s effects.
