Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Magicians of Bonds and Unity

[Spellcaster/Effect]

ATK/2,500 DEF/2,500

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by having 25 or more cards in your GY. While your opponent has 25 or more cards in their GY, this card gains 2500 ATK/DEF.

Magicians of Bonds and Unity is a quarter century secret rare from Age of Overlord and Duelist Nexus. Konami celebrates the 25th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh! with this spellcaster. The effects of this spellcaster have a theme for the anniversary. This spellcaster has 2,500 ATK, 2,500 DEF, and two effects.

The theme of this card is the number 25 for the 25th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh!. This spellcaster’s first effect depends on your graveyard having 25 cards and the second effect depends on the opponent’s graveyard having 25 cards. It is an unique concept. You may have some control over your graveyard or the opponent’s graveyard. It truly depends on your deck.

Summoning Condition:

Magicians of Bonds and Unity has restrictions for its summoning. Magicians of Bonds and Unity cannot be normal summoned. You may only special summon this card with its first effect.

Therefore, this restriction negatively impacts this card. It is a bad way to start an effect monster’s effect.  You cannot easily summon this spellcaster from the hand. You are unable to consistently play this spellcaster.

First Effect:

Magicians of Bonds and Unity requires your graveyard to have 25 or more cards in it to special summon this card from the hand. There is not a limited amount of activations for this effect. You may special summon up to three copies of this spellcaster in a single turn.

However, this effect is a poor design for a monster with 2,500 ATK. This effect is the only legal method to special summon this spellcaster. You will be in the late stages of the game when you have the opportunity to play this card.

Furthermore, this restriction impacts the speed of this card. It is a terrible card in your hand during the early game because your graveyard is unlikely to have 25 or more cards in it. Your first opportunity to play this card will be in the late game, and it is the only time to want this spellcaster in the hand.

In addition, This effect negatively impacts support from other spellcasters and generic cards. You cannot use effects from cards such as Monster Reborn to special summon this spellcaster to the field. Generic cards and support for spellcasters cannot override this effect monster’s limitations.

Therefore, you may play cards to add this card back to the hand if this card goes to the graveyard. Monster Reincarnation can add Magicians of Bonds and Unity from the graveyard to your hand. You have an additional opportunity to special summon this spellcaster from the hand.

Second Effect:

Magicians of Bonds and Unity gains 2,500 ATK when the opponent has 25 cards or more in his or her graveyard. This effect doubles the ATK of this spellcaster to 5,000 ATK. This spellcaster can destroy many opposing monsters in battle with this amount of offense.

Therefore, Magicians of Bonds and Unity has the potential to win the game if you have two or more copies of this spellcaster on the field. This spellcaster has 5,000 ATK in this situation. Two copies of Magicians of Bonds and Unity may inflict 10,000 points of damage with direct attacks.

However, this effect depends on the opponent’s graveyard. You are very unlikely to activate this effect against most opponents. Magicians of Bonds and Unity cannot consistently rely on this increase in ATK.

Material for Extra Deck Monsters:

You may use Magicians of Bonds and Unity as material for monsters from the extra deck. This level 8 monster can be a good option for XYZ Summons of rank 8 XYZ monsters. This monster may be used as material for Link Summons and Synchro Summons.

For example, you may use Magicians of Bonds and Unity as material for the link summon of Selene, Queen of the Master Magicians. Selene, Queen of the Master Magicians requires a spellcaster for material. This Link Monster is a useful card in decks with Spell Counters and Endymion.

For example, you may use two copies of Magicians of Bonds and Unity as materials for the XYZ summon of Thelematech Clatis. Thelematech Clatis requires two level 8 spellcasters for the materials, and two copies of this spellcaster meet the conditions for the summon. This XYZ monster is a good card in decks for spellcasters. Thelematech Clatis may special summon a spellcaster from the deck or hand to the field.

Use Magicians of Bonds and Unity as material for these monsters!
  • Selene, Queen of the Master Magicians
  • Thelematech Clatis

Support:

Magicians of Bonds and Unity has a lot of support from generic cards for all monsters and generic cards for Spellcasters. You can insert this card in any deck. The best decks for this card feature spellcasters and a few exceptions with other archetypes. You may play Magicians of Bonds and Unity with Dark Magician, Prophecy, and Spellcasters.

Furthermore, Magicians of Bonds and Unity needs a deck with a strategy milling cards so you may quickly special summon this monster from the hand. It is the best and fastest strategy for this spellcaster. An archetype such as Lightsworn may play this card because this archetype mills cards from its deck and have a high probability of a graveyard with 25 cards or more in it.

Many cards have effects to add Magicians of Bond and Unity to your hand. Justice of Prophecy and Lemon Magician Girl may add this spellcaster from the deck to the hand. These cards provide useful effects during the late game when you are able to special summon this spellcaster with 25 or more cards in your graveyard.

In addition, the Spellbook of Wisdom provides protection to Magicians of Bonds and Unity. Spellbook of Wisdom prevents an opponent’s spells or traps from affecting a spellcaster for an entire turn. This spell with protection has a useful effect for this spellcaster because this spellcaster does not have an effect to protect itself.

Play these cards with Magicians of Bonds and Unity!

Card Rating:

Overall, Magicians of Bonds and Unity is a mediocre card. Only a few archetypes can fully take advantage of this spellcaster’s effect in a quick manner. However, it is a dead card in your hand for more than half of the duel. This card depends on your and the opponent’s graveyards for its effects, and it is not constant strategy. Therefore, I only recommend playing Magicians of Bonds and Unity in a casual deck.

Card Rating: 1.5 out of 5.0 stars
