Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Apprentice Illusion Magician

[Spellcaster/Effect]

ATK/2,000 DEF/1,700

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by discarding 1 card. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 “Dark Magician” from your Deck to your hand. During damage calculation, if your other DARK Spellcaster monster battles an opponent’s monster (Quick Effect): You can send this card from your hand or face-up field to the GY; that monster you control gains 2000 ATK/DEF during that damage calculation only.

One of the best cards for the Dark Magician is Apprentice Illusion Magician. This cute spellcaster has three powerful effect. She provides excellent support for the ultimate wizard in terms of attack and defense. This spellcaster adds consistency to the deck and she elevates the Dark Magician.

First Effect:

Apprentice Illusion Magician special summons herself to the field. The effect requires you to discard one from the hand. You can always activate this effect as long as you have a card in the hand.

Monsters with this type of effect have a lot of value. This spellcaster special summons herself without any restrictions. You may discard any card for the cost. You have a monster on the field with multiple effects for your advantage.

Furthermore, this effect also sets up special summons of monsters from your extra deck. You may use Apprentice Illusion Magician for material of Link Monsters, XYZ Monsters, and Synchro Monsters. You have a stronger monster from the extra deck.

For example, you may use Apprentice Illusion Magician and Dark Magician Girl to XYZ summon Magi Magi ☆ Magician Gal. Both of these effect monsters are level six and may perform this XYZ summon. Magi Magi ☆ Magician Gal is also a decent monster because she may special summon an opponent’s monster from his or her graveyard to your side of the field.

Second Effect:

Apprentice Illusion Magician adds consistency to the deck. Apprentice Illusion Magician adds Dark Magician from the deck to your hand when you normal or special summon this monster. You gain a card without a cost for the second effect.

Therefore, the first effect triggers the second effect. The cost of one discard breaks even because you are adding Dark Magician from the deck to your hand. You maintain the same number of resources, and gain the key card of the deck.

In addition, the consistency from this effect adds a lot of value to Apprentice Illusion Magician. You need the Dark Magician for many of your cards. You have this normal monster in your hand, and you activate cards to play the deck’s signature monster.

Third Effect:

Apprentice Illusion Magician is also a hand trap with her in your hand. You may discard her or send her to the graveyard if she is on the field to add 2,000 power to any dark spellcaster. An opponent may attack your Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl, but this effect monster increases your monster’s ATK during this battle.

This effect helps your dark spellcasters overcome the opponent’s powerful monsters. Opponents would be unaware of this card in your hand when they declare an attack. Your monster such as the Dark Magician gains 2,000 ATK and his total ATK would be 4,500. Dark Magician can defeat nearly any monster in battle under this circumstance.

Support:

Apprentice Illusion Magician seamlessly fits in many decks with the Dark Magician. You may have a deck for ritual monsters or the fusion monsters in the archetype. All of these decks have the same requirement of the Dark Magician. Apprentice Illusion Magician is a great option for a card with the effect to add Dark Magician to your hand.

Dark Horizon, Magician Navigation, and Magician’s Circle special summon Apprentice Illusion Magician from the deck. All of these traps have synergy with this spellcaster. Their effects trigger the second effect of Apprentice Illusion Magician, and you may add Dark Magician from the deck to your hand.

For example, Magician Navigation has a fantastic combo with Apprentice Illusion Magician. Magician Navigation special summons Dark Magician from your hand and Apprentice Illusion Magician from the deck. In addition, this trap card triggers the second effect of Apprentice Illusion Magician and you may add a Dark Magician from your deck to your hand. This combo adds a total of two cards. You special summon one monster from the deck and you have a Dark Magician in your hand.

Play these cards with Apprentice Illusion Magician!
