Unit of The Week: Star-vader, Dark Zodiac

The Star-vaders line up. That has the meaning of an eternal lock.

[ACT](VC): Legion20000 “Star-vader, Astro Reaper” (If your opponent’s vanguard is grade 3 or greater, this unit may return four cards from your drop zone into your deck once, search your deck for the specified card, and Legion)
[AUTO](VC):[Counter Blast (1)] When this unit Legion, you may pay the cost. If you do, all of your opponent’s locked cards cannot be unlocked during his or her next end phase.
[ACT](VC):[Choose one card with the same card name as a unit in your (VC) from your hand, and discard it] Choose a rear-guard in your opponent’s front row and back row, and lock them. This ability cannot be used for the rest of that turn. (The locked card is turned face down, and cannot do anything. It turns face up at the end of the owner’s turn.)

Lock is a very powerful ability that surpasses anything every seen before on Cray. Omega Lock is even more devastating and was once believed to be a lost power after Star-vader, “Omega” Grandiose’s defeat. However, a new Star-vader known as Star-vader, Dark Zodiac wields the mighty power of Omega Lock. King Alfred called a state of emergency after witnessing the Omega’s power return in its scariest form. Blaster Blade has drawn his blade to tackle his next challenge of the Star-vaders, Dark Zodiac.

I’m going to start this review by first taking a look at Dark Zodiac’s first skill. Dark Zodiac’s Legion skill is by counter blasting one damage, your opponent’s locked cards cannot be unlocked during his or her next end phrase. It is the legendary Omega Lock. This skill can only be used when you activate Legion so you must perform Legion every time you want to use this skill. Omega Lock makes him a very good unit to have in an “Omega” Grandiose deck to keep your opponent on lockdown. He is a good leading vanguard to use to Omega Lock units to save “Omega” Grandiose for the finisher.

Next, he shows his true power in his second skill by locking a rear-guard in the front row and back row. An entire column is shut down and another column is weaken with its booster being locked. This skill does not require Dark Zodiac to be in Legion to activate it. You can unleash a lock by discarding a copy of Dark Zodiac and putting it back into the deck when you perform Legion during your next turn. Star-vader, Astro Reaper is able to search for a copy of one of your vanguards for you can reuse Dark Zodiac’s Omega Lock during your next turn. Astro Reaper sets up the perfect combo to shut down two columns and weaken the Vanguard’s column in two turns with back to back Omega Locks.

Furthermore, the more cards you lock, the more cards that will be trapped in Omega lock during the turn when you perform Legion. There are many Star-vaders, who are able to assist in locking more units when Dark Zodiac uses both of his skills. Break ride Dark Zodiac onto Star-vader Infinite Zero Dragon to create an infamous triangle lock for two consecutive turns. Companion Star Star-vader, Photon becomes an all-star with Omega Lock and Dark Zodiac’s second skill. He locks a rear-guard when he is called to a rear-guard circle, your opponent has a locked rear-guard, and you have a Star-vader as your vanguard. You can easily defend yourself during your opponent’s next two turns as he or she can only attack with their vanguard.

Card Rating:

Given these points, Star-vader, Dark Zodiac is an excellent Legion to build a Link Joker deck around. I have no complaints about this guy. His ability to lock cards early in the game makes him a very difficult card to play against. The skill is very consistent with Astro Reaper searching for copies of himself or Dark Zodiac to use to fuel Dark Zodiac’s second skill. He is also an interesting choice as a leading vanguard for an Omega Grandiose deck. Is Dark Zodiac the strongest Star-vader? He does not quite reach the number one mark, but he is a great choice for any Star-vader deck.

Card Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars
