The mighty flame dragon of Kagero in the Dragon Empire has a rich legacy in Cardfight!! Vanguard. Dragonic Overlord has appeared in every era of the game, and he is Toshiki Kai’s signature unit. The leader of Kagero enters the D-Standard Format of Cardfight!! Vanguard. Dragonic Overlord (D Series) has similar abilities to his previous cards, and he has new artwork in reflection of the style from Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress.
D-Standard Format:
Dragonic Overlord two abilities on his text in addition to his Persona Ride. This version of Kagero’s flame dragon resembles the original card from Cardfight!! Vanguard. Bushiroad made this card to fit in the D-Standard Format. This version of Dragonic Overlord has better abilities. In addition, the abilities of this Dragonic Overlord have a lower cost than the original version.
First Ability:
Your opponent cannot call cards from his or her hand when Dragonic Overlord attacks an opponent’s rear-guard. This ability basically retires an opponent’s rear-guard during battle. The opponent has one less card to intercept your attacks. Your units will have a slightly greater chance to break the defense and deal damage.
Furthermore, the opponent does not have many options to block the attack. The opponent’s only option is intercepting the attack with a grade 2 unit to avoid Dragonic Overlord’s second ability. An intercept may not be worth it because the opponent will still lose a rear-guard.
In addition, this ability complements the second ability. Dragonic Overlord can stand after battle if his attack hits an opponent’s unit. The first ability increases your chances of hitting an opponent’s unit.
Second Ability:
The signature ability of Dragonic Overlord is standing after battle. This version stands after his first battle if his attack hits an opponent’s unit. Therefore, you pressure the opponent with a second attack from your vanguard.
Furthermore, the cost of the second ability is a counter blast and discarding a card from your hand. The ability has a very low cost. Your hand will add a card after your single drive check from Dragonic Overlord’s second attack. You will not lose an advantage from your hand’s size.
In addition, you will have two drive checks from the first attack and one drive check from the second attack for a total of three drive checks for the turn. This ability increases your odds of checking an Over Trigger. The Over Trigger Dragon Deity King of Resurgence, Dragveda will stand Dragonic Overlord for a third attack! Then, you will truly have the moment of the game and can grab victory.

Premium Format:
Dragonic Overlord (D Series) is not a great fit for Overlord in the premium format. His skills do not offer an advantage. You will gain more advantages from other cards such as Dragonic Overlord (V Series) and Dragonic Overlord “The X” (V Series). Their abilities offer stronger plays in the premium format.
However, Dragonic Overlord (V Series) is a better card for the premium format instead of Dragonic Overlord (D Series). You gain long-term value from Dragonic Overlord (V Series) in a game. You gain an Imaginary Gift: Force, and this marker remains on the field.
On the other hand,, Dragonic Overlord (D Series) has a Persona Ride and this increase in power is temporary. You do not maintain this power for the remainder of the game. A Force marker from Dragonic Overlord (V Series) is the ideal mechanic for the premium format.
