Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn

“Lightsworn” monsters you control cannot be banished by card effects. You can only use each of the following effects of “Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn” once per turn. If this card is Synchro Summoned: You can send “Lightsworn” monsters with different Types from your Deck to the GY, up to the number of “Lightsworn” monsters used as this card’s material. You can banish up to 4 “Lightsworn” monsters from your GY; send that many cards from the top of your Deck to the GY.

Every successful deck has an engine. Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn is an engine for Lightsworn. This powerful synchro monster has effects with the purpose to set up Judgment Dragon and Punishment Dragon. She enables the deck’s bosses and sets the condition to unleash these cards to the field.

First Effect:

Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn prevents your Lightsworn monsters on the field from being banished by cards’ effects. Your cards and the opponent’s cards cannot banish your monsters with Lightsworn in their names. It provides protection from some of the strongest cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Therefore, the opponent cannot easily banish your Lightsworn monsters on the field with effects. This effect perfectly counters cards such as Black Luster Solider, Envoy of The Beginning. This effect ensures your Lightsworn monsters to be sent to the graveyard.

Second Effect:

Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn allows you to send monsters of different types with Lightsworn in their names from the deck to the graveyard up to the number of materials for her synchro summon.  This effect greatly accelerates the deck’s strategy. You are able to place two or more monsters with Lightsworns in the graveyard, and you have full control of the selection of monsters.

Furthermore, Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn has synergy with many members of her archetype. You can create strong combos with this effect. She is setting up special summons for a variety of monsters in the archetype.

For example, some Lightsworn monsters can only be special summoned with an effect. Felis, Lightsworn Archer and Wulf, Lightsworn Beast may special summon themselves when an effect sends them to the graveyard. This synchro monster fulfills this condition. Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn may send Felis, Lightsworn Archer and Wulf, Lightsworn Beast to the graveyard, and these effect monsters special summon themselves from the graveyard.

Third Effect:

Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn may banish up to four monsters with Lightsworn in their names from the graveyard, and she sends the same number of cards from the deck to the graveyard. This effect sets up your special summons and the effects of your other monsters. You can mill up to four cards with this effect. 

Therefore, this effect enables Punishment Dragon. You can select four Lightsworns with different names in the graveyard and banish them. The conditions are set for the special summon of Punishment Dragon. You have banished four monsters with LIghtsworn in their names.

Synchro Summon:

Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn requires one tuner monster and one or more non-tuner monsters for her synchro summons. Lightsworns have a good amount of tuner monsters. You can consistently play this synchro monster from the extra deck.

For instance, you may use Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn and Lightsworn Dragonling as materials for the synchro summon. These monsters have a total of eight levels. They may synchro summon Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn from the extra deck.

Support:

Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn has stellar support from Lightsworn. She perfectly fits in Lightsworn and complements the archetype’s strategy. Many tuners in the archetype may special summon her from the extra deck. She has great synergy with many monsters in the archetype due to her effects.

Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn’s effects help summon Judgment Dragon and Punishment Dragon. Therefore, she adds consistency to these powerful dragons. This synchro monster consistently miles cards and sends Lightsworns to the graveyard. She also banishes Lightsworns from the graveyard. Your graveyard should have the resources in place for the special summons of Judgment Dragon and Punishment Dragon.

Furthermore, this strategy with Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn helps fusion summon Enlightenment Dragon. You must have one copy of Judgment Dragon and Punishment Dragon. One of these dragons need to be on the field and the other one must be in the graveyard. You may banish them for the special summon of  Enlightenment Dragon.

Overall, Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn is an efficient card for Lightsworn. This synchro monster is a staple in the extra deck. Her effects have synergy with many cards. She sets you for successful with the ability to play cards such as Judgment Dragon and Punishment Dragon with ease. Therefore, I recommend playing at least one copy of  Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn in your extra deck.
