Today’s Duelist Spotlight focuses on the former World Champion Seto Kaiba. Kaiba is the proud owner of Kaiba Corp. He is famous for being Yugi’s fiercest rival. Kaiba’s signature card is the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. He owns three of the four copies in the world!
Kaiba’s decks primary focus is summoning the Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. They were some of the most powerful and rare cards during this time. He uses cards such as Lord of Dragons, Flute of Summoning Dragon, and Kaiser Sea Horse to quickly special summon his Blue-Eyes White Dragons. Kaiba destroys his opponent’s decks with the Crush Card Virus trap card. This must be the most expensive card in the anime series because Kaiba is the only player who has played this card in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Victory is nearly guaranteed when this card is successfully played. Opponent’s decks would be greatly weakened with their strongest monsters in the grave yard. Opponents would have to strongly rely on combinations with weak monsters, spells, and traps.
Most notably is Kaiba’s extra deck. He is one of the few original series characters to regularly use many fusion monsters. His extra deck introduced the XYZ (not the monster type) arch-type. They are a group of machine type monsters that combine into powerful fusion monsters. Kaiba’s most famous fusion monster is none other then the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon.
During Battle City, Kaiba received Obelisk the Tormentor. However, Obelisk the Tormentor is not an easy monster to control or summon. Obelisk requires three tributes to summon. He had to learn new tactics to easily summon Obelisk. He would special summon three Blue-Eyes White Dragons and tribute them to special summon Obelisk the Tormentor. If he did not have enough monsters to summon Obelisk then he would use a powerful card known as Soul Exchange. Soul Exchange’s anime effect is you can tribute all of your opponent’s monsters to summon a monster like Obelisk the Tormentor!
Kaiba was a masterful trash talker. Trash talking may not appear to be a skill to some. However, it is a great psychological weapon. He flusters Joey into making many misplays in their duels. Sometimes he can even anger Atem during duels.
Finally, Kaiba’s most notable trait is his desire to improve his deck and skills. Kaiba knows he is a great duelist. However, he knows he can become a better duelist. He spends long hours researching cards and play styles to defeat Yugi. One day his hard work may pay off to reclaim the world championship.
In Conclusion, Seto Kaiba is a cunning, fierce, intelligent, and skillful duelist. Many including myself rank Kaiba as the second best duelist in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Series! He is always one step ahead of his opponents. Most importantly Kaiba understands the game. He is always seeking improvement to one day regain the title as king of games!
