Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Review: Light and Darkness Dragon

[Dragon/Effect]

ATK/2.800 DEF/2,300

Cannot be Special Summoned. While face-up on the field, this card is also DARK-Attribute. Once per Chain, during either player’s turn, when a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated: This card loses exactly 500 ATK and DEF and that activation is negated. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: Target 1 monster in your Graveyard (if possible); destroy all cards you control, also Special Summon that monster (if any).

Light and Darkness Dragon is an effect monster from Yu-Gi-Oh!. This dragon is a unique effect monster. It is a generic card for dragons. It can become an effect monster with the attributes of light and dark. Decks with support for these attributes benefit from this dragon.

First Effect:

Light and Darkness Dragon cannot be special summoned. You can only normal summon this monster with two tributes. You must tribute two of your monsters for this single effect monster from the hand.

Therefore, the restriction from this effect is a major disadvantage. You are unable to take advantage of the generic support for dragons to special summon this card. You cannot special summon this card from the deck, hand, and graveyard.

Second Effect:

Light and Darkness Dragon also had the dark attribute when it face-up is on the field. This effect monster has two attribute of light and dark.  Therefore, it has both attribute in its name.

Furthermore, Light and Darkness Dragon has access to support for both attribute. This effect provides a useful advantages in decks with Chaos. You can use both attributes to your advantage with the proper support.

Third Effect:

Light and Darkness Dragon may negate the effect of a card once during a chain. The cost is decreasing the ATK of this effect monster by 500 ATK. Light and Darkness Dragon may negate an opponent’s cards to prevent his or her strategy.

Furthermore, Light and Darkness Dragon may prevent the opponent from countering your strategy. An opponent may have a response to the activation of one of your cards. This effect monster negates the opponent’s response, and you may continue with your original card’s activation.

Fourth Effect:

Light and Darkness Dragon may special summon one monster in the graveyard when this effect monster is destroyed and sent to the graveyard. This effect provides a new monster on the field. You lose one monster, but gain another monster to maintain a monster on the field.

Furthermore, many decks with dragons benefit from this effect. This effect provides a great opportunity to regain a key monster from the graveyard. Blue-Eyes have many powerful dragons and they may regain an important monster from the graveyard.

Weaknesses:

Light and Darkness Dragon has many flaws despite its ability to negate the effects of an opponent’s card. Its flaws come from its first and third effects. These effects create multiple problems with this effect monster.

First, you cannot special summon Light and Darkness Dragon. This card can be slow to play in the modern era of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Decks want to quickly special summon monsters to the field. The cost of two tributes for this card is a hefty price.

Second, Light and Darkness Dragon deceases its ATK to negate an effect. This ability causes this card to become vulnerable in battle. This effect monster may negate the effects of an opponent’s monster. The opponent’s monster with a higher ATK than Light and Darkness Dragon can destroy Light and Darkness Dragon in battle.

Support:

Dragons have a lot of generic cards. The supportive cards for dragons have synergy with Light and Darkness Dragon. Some monsters and spells can search for this effect monster. Some cards provide protection for this card.

Many cards can add Light and Darkness Dragon from the deck to the hand. Draconnection and Krystal Dragon may add this effect monster from the deck to the hand. These cards provide quick access to this effect monster. You will be in position to perform the normal summon.

Divine Dragon Apocralyph can add Light and Darkness Dragon from the graveyard to the hand. You must discard a card from the hand for this cost. Divine Dragon Apocralyph is a good option to retrieve Light and Darkness Dragon from the graveyard.

Play these cards with Light and Darkness Dragon!
  • Divine Dragon Apocralyph
  • Dragon’s Light and Darkness
  • Draconnection
  • Krystal Dragon

Card Rating:

Overall, Light and Darkness Dragon is a mediocre card in today’s format of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Its first effect greatly limit this card. You cannot special summon it under any circumstances. However, its second, third, and fourth effects are useful if you are able to normal summon this card. This dragon can provide advantages in some games. Therefore, I only recommend playing Light and Darkness Dragon in a casual deck.

Card Rating: 2.5 out of 5.0 stars
